Ethynyl estradiol is an orally bio-active estrogen used in almost all modern formulations of combined oral contraceptive pills like Yaz, Yasmin, Yasminelle, Ocella, Zarah, Syeda, Gianvi, Zafyral, Loryna, etc. There have been concerns raised regarding ethynyl estradiol’s safety and is thus not recommended as a first line agent. It is one of the most commonly used medications.

You may need an attorney specializing in ethynyl estradiol if you have suffered any of the serious side effects of the drug described further below. If you have been a victim of this drug and have suffered serious injury as a result of taking it, please contact JD Law Group immediately at 1-888-736-4248 to discuss your legal rights and options.

Ethynyl estradiol is part of certain birth control formulations. The compound differs from other synthetic progestins in that its pharmacological profile in preclinical studies shows it to be closer to the natural progesterone. As such it has anti-mineralocorticoid properties, counteracts the estrogen-stimulated activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and is not androgenic. With its activities similar to spironolactone it may lead to less water retention and breast tenderness while improving skin appearance (less acne).

Adverse Reactions to Ethynyl Estradiol:

Ethynyl estradiol does have the potential for adverse reactions. Many of them are quite serious. These side effects can include the following:

· Decreased sex drive
· Spotting or bleeding between periods
· Headaches
· Nausea
· Vomiting
· Increased appetite
· Weight gain
· Vaginal discharge
· Yeast infections

More Serious Side Effects of Ethynyl Estradiol:

· Venous thromboembolism
· Breast lumps
· Heart attack
· Depression
· Other psychiatric issues
· Hyperkalemia
· Liver damage
· Hypertension
· Migraines
· Stroke
· Frequent vaginal bleeding
· Serious allergic reactions
· Pulmonary embolism
· Arrhythmia

Arrhythmias have been developed by women taking ethynyl estradiol. These are characterized by chest pain, fatigue, sweating, feeling anxious, and dizziness, fluttering in the chest or neck, palpitations, lightheadedness, shortness of breath and loss of consciousness. Severity of the arrhythmia will ultimately determine the type of treatment necessary, as well as other factors including age and medical history. Some serious arrhythmias require pacemakers or other implant devices, medications and surgeries, while many can be treated by reducing caffeine, nicotine and alcohol and introducing stress reduction and relaxation techniques into the lifestyle. There is no known cure for an arrhythmia.

More recently, several class action lawsuits have been filed against Bayer, who was the manufacturer of Yaz, a drug that contains ethynyl estradiol. These lawsuits came after Bayer failed to warn users appropriately of the dangerous side effects of its original drug, “Yaz”. These side effects can be fatal and the FDA did bring the hammer down on Bayer, demanding that the Yaz marketing campaigns be changed to A.) stop exaggerating the contraceptive’s abilities and B.) include proper notification of the public to the dangerous adverse effects of this contraceptive medication.

Any woman who develops any of the severe symptoms mentioned above should discontinue ethynyl estradiol and seek medical attention immediately to ensure that their health and well being are secure.

If you have suffered a serious injury by taking ethynyl estradiol, please contact JD Law Group immediately at 1-888-736-4248 to discuss your legal rights and options.
