Levaquin (levofloxacin)

WARNING: THE FDA HAS NOTIFIED MANUFACTURERS OF FLUOROQUINOLONE ANTIMICROBIAL DRUGS THAT A BOXED WARNING IN THE PRODUCT CONCERNING THE INCREASED RISK OF TENDINITIS AND TENDON RUPTURE IS NECESSARY. THIS INCLUDES THE DRUG LEVOFLOXACIN. THE AGENCY HAS ALSO DETERMINED THAT IT IS NECESSARY FOR MANUFACTURERS OF THE DRUGS TO PROVIDE A MEDICATION GUIDE TO PATIENTS ABOUT POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS.

Severe effects of Levaquin:

- Severe allergic reactions
- Difficulty breathing and/or tightness in the chest
- Bloody or tarry stools
- Arrhythmia
- Decreased or painful urination
- Sore throat, or unusual cough
- Hallucinations
- Inability to move or bear weight on a joint or tendon area
- Mood or mental changes
- Severe or persistent diarrhea, stomach pains or cramps
- Severe or persistent dizziness,
- Lightheadedness
- Symptoms of high or low blood sugar
- Symptoms of liver problems (dark urine, loss of appetite, pale stools, jaundice)

If any of these severe side effects manifest themselves, you should see your doctor or seek medical help immediately.

Common side effects when using Levaquin:

- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Gas
- Headache
- Lightheadedness
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Insomnia

In clinical studies of Levaquin, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Levaquin were documented and compared to side effects that occurred in a similar group of people taking a different antibiotic. This methodology made it possible to see what side effects from using Levaquin occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compare to the group taking a different medication.

In 1 to 2 percent of Levaquin users, the following side effects manifested themselves:

- Yeast infections
- Shortness of breath
- Vomiting
- Indigestion or heartburn
- Water retention
- Pain at the injection site
- Vaginal irritation or infection

Rare side effects (less than 1 percent of users) from use of Levaquin include anemia, loss of appetite, vertigo, nosebleeds, ringing of the ears (tinnitus) and sensitivity to the sun.
